My Intro and First Body paragraphs to my English Portfolio Cover letter

Long title...

English is the hardest language to learn in the world. Somehow though, I’ve made it seem easy. Could it be the fact that I am technically inclined? Or perhaps it’s the column of straight A’s that catches your eye. Whatever the reason, I have rightfully earned a high mark in my English 111 class.

High grades aren’t earned easily though. One must work, and work hard to achieve them. They need to know what’s going on with the class, what assignments are due when, how to complete the assignments to satisfaction and above and beyond. All this is part of the everyday thought processes of myself. Whenever I go to school, that is all I think about now. It suddenly becomes my one and only job and concern. Not many students possess this ability. They are eternally distracted by other things, some with a right to, but others not. My gained ability to concentrate on one thing at a time in school has been honed to what is similar to the calm of a Zen Master. This feat alone should merit high marks in all my classes.

Learning Reflection for the Week of 11/9

This week I learned that working in groups is so much different on so many levels than working alone or with only one or two other people.

First off, I think that the best group size is a small group. No more than your self and 3 other group members. Any more than that, things and tasks get lost, and mis-communication runs rampant.

My group right now is of 5 partners 6 total including myself. I'm fortunate though, as my group members are excellent.

The way that groups function is interesting. Everyone doesn't want to get in anybody elses way. It is a constant loop of people giving way to other people. When ever an idea is introduced, it is passed usually to about 2 people, then is seemingly dropped and random conversation follows. A leader figure needs to take charge to actually move the group along the decision making process. Otherwise, nobody will get anywhere.

It just so happens that I've become a leader figure in the two classes of mine that are doing group work right now. I noticed the patterns above, and eventually just decided that instead of waiting in awkwardness for someone to take charge, I'd just do it. Eventually though, everyone warmed up to the idea of a group, and I've since "stepped down" from my "role," but I know what to do the next time I'm assigned to work in a group of more than 4 people total.

The First "Wiki worthy" post

This post is the first "wiki worthy" post out of a potential bunch. The post I'm making wiki worthy is from this blog and is entitled: Keep Your Head Above Water. This post could go under the sections of either Keep Your Head Above Water, or Steps to Success.

The Edited Post:

I'm doing exactly what I told myself I wouldn't do this year. Cramming. I have to get this midterm portfolio taken care of tonight because it's due tomorrow. I'm not tired though, I've got a Nos in me, and I feel like it's 12 in the afternoon instead of at night.

Work is piling up. I find myself procrastinating more. Now that the initial "wow" factor of being a college student has worn off. I'm lapsing and this cannot happen. I need to actually heed some of the advice and use some of the resources that have been given to me quickly or I'll fall into a pit I won't be able to get out of very easily.

Work is still not helping education wise. (Imagine that...) But I need the money, so there is no quitting. I know I can't even ask for money from my parents, that would be like the equivalent of an un-pardonable sin. I did get a raise though. 30 cents. From 8.65 to 8.95 an hour. Which, don't get me wrong, is definitely good, bt I make 10 and 20 an hour doing web design/development.

In all, college is college, sort of exciting, but a lot of work. I need more fun, stat...

Sections and what I'd expect from them (for the Wiki)

My Sections:

    Sections and Expectations

    1. Real Students
    2. I'd expect to hear real stories of students struggles or triumphs in Sarge.

      Do's and Don'ts
    1. I'd expect to find some inside info and college policies such as dress code and attendence

      Keeping Your Head Above Water
    1. I'd expect to find some study habits and time and/or money management tips/techniques

      First Week
    1. I'd expect to find info here on what to do during the first week like: getting an ID and parking pass, finding my classes alright, switching classes if needed, getting to know people etc.

      This Ain't Grade 13
    1. I'd expect to find things that solidified my understanding that Sarge is just like any other college out there.

      Habits of Mind
    1. If I didn't know what the habits of mind were, I don't know what I'd expect. If I did know of them I'd expect the Habit and a description for that habit along with the PDF of the Habits and maybe some examples and testimonials of them in action for good measure

      Steps to Success
    1. My first impression would be that it sounds like a sales pitch. If that impression isn't met though, I'd switch to expecting a list of general steps to be successful.
    2. NOTE:I think we should be more specific here. Steps to Success for WHAT?

      Clues from the Formerly Clueless
    1. Here, I'd expect something along the lines of insider tips from real, current Sarge students.
